The flora, due to the cold dry winters, mostly consists of cold tolerant evergreen conifers with needle like leaves that are wax covered so they do not fall in the fall. They also grow seeds that develop into cones. Examples would be pine, fur, and spruce. They have adapted this way so that they lose less water and shed snow more easily. This is important because during the winter the ground freezes and the roots cannot replace lost water by absorbing the already not very nutritious soil. Because of the acidic soil the forest floor of the taiga has few plants. The trees seem like straight dead shafts of bark and wood until the green tops. Plant growth is most abundant during the summer because of the large amounts of precipitation and almost constant daylight.
Soil
The Taiga has very thin soil with poor nutrience. It is also very acidic not allowing much plant growth. The soil forms very slowly in the Taiga because the climate and acidity provides slow decomposition.
